ORCHID CARE
Orchids are renowned for their exquisite beauty and elegance, making them a popular choice in floral arrangements and as potted gifts. With proper care, these stunning and exotic plants can thrive and provide long-lasting enjoyment. This guide provides comprehensive orchid care instructions, focusing on both cut orchids and potted plants, to ensure they remain healthy and beautiful.
Light Requirements
Orchids generally thrive in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch their delicate petals and leaves. East-facing windows are often ideal, providing gentle morning light. For south or west-facing windows, a sheer curtain can help filter intense rays. Dark green leaves can indicate insufficient light, while pale or yellowish leaves might suggest too much light.
Temperature and Humidity
Most orchids prefer temperatures between 60°F and 90°F (15°C to 32°C), with specific ranges varying by type. It’s crucial to avoid placing orchids near heating or cooling vents, as extreme temperature fluctuations and dry air can be detrimental . Many orchids also benefit from a night time temperature drop, which can encourage flowering.
Orchids appreciate a humid environment, ideally between 55-75% for many varieties. To increase humidity, especially in dry homes, consider using a humidity tray (a tray with pebbles and water, ensuring the pot doesn’t sit directly in the water) or a room humidifier .
Watering
Overwatering is a common cause of orchid demise. Most orchids prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. When watering, thoroughly drench the pot and allow it to drain completely, never letting the plant sit in standing water. Tepid water is preferred, and watering in the morning allows foliage to dry by nightfall. A helpful trick for potted orchids is to use three ice cubes per week for a full-size orchid, ensuring the growing medium stays moist but not waterlogged. For Phalaenopsis, watering every 1-2 weeks is typical, allowing the potting medium to dry between waterings, with less frequency in cooler months.
Potting Medium and Repotting
Orchids should be planted in well-draining media like orchid bark or sphagnum moss, which mimic their natural growing environment and prevent root rot. Repotting is generally recommended every 1-2 years to refresh the growing medium and inspect roots. Phalaenopsis orchids, for example, can often be repotted into the same size pot as they grow upwards.
Fertilization
Feeding orchids promotes growth and blooming. A balanced fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20 ratio) can be applied every few weeks, reducing frequency in winter. It’s important never to fertilize a dry plant.
